what sells the store or place large dog crates extended? I need to put a foot in front of the door so they can go

whether or not when they want, but not in the house.

PetSmart, if you do not, they can order it for you at a good price.

How can I prevent my dog from scratching the back of he door when I leave?

My dog is miserable when I lock her in the crate so I am trying to let her have free range of the house. She has extreme separation anxiety so she scratches the back of the door when I leave. I tried putting up gates but she will scratch/bite through it if she has enough time. I am also concerned that the paint she is licking is poisonous.

The level of separation anxiety that your dog is experiencing needs to be addressed. Fortunately, it is a learned behavior and can be corrected. There are a couple of other issues that I would like to address first, however.

You indicate that the dog is "miserable" when you lock her in the crate. That should be the first thing that you need to address. In order to address that, you will need to reacclimate the dog to the crate for the right reasons. The crate should be a "safe place" in the eyes of the dog, and should be associated with positive experiences. I would recommend that you begin feeding the dog in the crate and allowing her to sleep there. Also, leave the crate open at all times, so that the dog can go in on her own and become comfortable in there.

As for the separation anxiety...when leaving, do not make a big deal of it. Also, make sure that she can see you when you are outside. Only stay outside for a minute, then immediately go back inside. IGNORE her at this point until she calms back down. Then do it again. Eventually, work up to 5 minutes outside...again where she can see you...then begin to vary the times. Eventually, she will get accustomed to you leaving and returning, and she will associate the two as connected.

When you are leaving the house for an extended period, you will have to crate her. If you have properly associated the crate with safety, it should help to ease her anxiety as well.
