Pigs as pets?
This is aimed at people who currently or have ever had a pig as a household pet, preferably in urban areas .. If anyone has in Australia, even better, but I hear they are quite common in the U.S. so just wondering what it feels like a pig like a dog or a cat and how to keep a pig compared to keeping a dog? I live in Sydney, Australia, want one, but asked my advice ask the local law and strongly discourage it. Of course I have a dog at the time .. just thought I'd add that. Get a set of answers here! I've heard you are very intellegent, in fact one of the most intellegent animals. Based on that I would assume it would be fairly easy to train .. if i get a pig but not by afew decades yet! I just want to know experiences of some people
I know several people who have owned pot belly pigs as pets, I have even considered getting one for our zoo. How do they act and how pets are highly dependent on the owner and the amount of time you are willing to invest with them. Unfortunately, they were considered a "fad" pet back in the early 1990s, and many people made them think they were cute and did not realize the amount of work that went into the care of one. There are many rescue organizations across the country housing pot bellies were neglected or surrendered when it ceases to be a little piglet small. One of my friends had one he liked - he acted like a dog and lived at home. He had his own "Room" with a bed, toys and litterbox (although a large litterbox). It was great for a couple of years - until she was a baby. He was incredibly jealous and not adapting to changes at home and she had to rehome. They are smart, but sometimes are too smart to handle not being the "baby" of the family anymore. Another friend of mine has one that apparently turned out to be a cross that reached a weight exceeding 125 pounds. Sometimes owners overfeed them, but sometimes not can ensure their lineage and ending with a pet pig the size of a food. His pigs had to be transferred to an outdoor patio (luckily, are a large dairy farm), and his perfectly happy in a calf hutch. He wanders around the yard during the day and loves his children, but have a problem with it yet want to enter the house and sit on the sofa good. Pigs CAN make good pets, but I would not keep one in an urban area or in a rental property. They do the time out, exercise room, and if they grow too large to be an indoor pet, you have to have other options available for housing. I personally do not keep cover at all - the smell pigs, regardless of how often you bathe. If you really want one, you should consider moving outside the boundaries of city - maybe rent or buy a home with a small property. I do not think a pig in a city will be a happy animal.
